Trainer Name: Mathew Lawrence Mathew LawrenceMathew has been at the top of the professional showing ladder for many years. His interest in horses and ponies started, like many people, at his local riding school, where he soon developed a special affinity with the horses and ponies he rode. It was this grounding which provided him with the platform from where his professional showing career was launched.
When Mathew left school his passion for ponies led him to a top class pony stud, where he was involved in the breeding, production and breaking of many outstanding ponies, competing at all the major county shows across the UK. Since then, Mathew’s career history reads like a who’s who of the equine world, with considerable success in all the major equestrian disciplines. He holds the record of a triple supreme tile for the ridden mountain and moorland pony championship at Olympia. – but is equally at home riding and producing top class hacks, hunters, cobs and coloured horses and ponies – including two championships at the Horse of the Year Show. This makes him a truly all-round professional rider, whose achievements and success belie his modest demeanour. Mathew is a popular and talented instructor for riders or all ages and abilities, and is in great demand across both the UK and abroad, as a trainer to his up and coming protégés. Mathew is delighted to be part of the Showing Register master class taking place at this year’s Horse of the Year Show – and is looking forward to helping riders and their mounts on the road to future success.
Trainer Name: Penny Hollings Penny HollingsI started riding when I was 10 and earned rides by mucking out at a riding school, I was so desperate to ride. I got my own horse when I was 14 and we competed at riding clubs.
The desire to succeed came from those early years when I would hack to shows (my horse wouldn’t load), nothing stopped me getting there. I watched what the winners did and copied and tweaked until we too were winners moving upwards all the time until I qualified her for HOYS in 1987 to compete in the small riding horse class, whilst still working in my parents’ Post Office. I have been home produced as well as a professional trainer, which I think gives me a more balanced perspective. I love teaching and helping people to work hard to achieve their goals, whatever the level. My daughter Alex now rides my riding horse’s grand daughter, Pendle First Light, which gives me great pleasure. Website:
